What you really need to set up a home gym (without overspending)
The most common mistake when someone decides to set up their own gym is to try to copy a commercial gym. Machines, accessories… and in the end, a space full of things that are hardly used.
If your goal is to gain strength, gain muscle mass or improve your performance, you need very little:
- A solid support or rack
- A stable bank
- A good bar
- Discs
- Some accessory material
With that you can do just about anything. Squats, bench presses, deadlifts, pull-ups, accessory work… everything.

The basis of it all: rack or stand for safe strength training
If I had to choose just one thing to start with, it would be a good bracket.
You can’t progress in squat, press or heavy work if you’re not confident. Training with fear limits your strength, your technique and your progress.
If you have space, a power cage is the most complete option. It allows you to train TO FAILURE safely thanks to the protective bars. It is the heart of any serious gym.

The weight bench: the place where you build your strength
I have tried many benches over the years, and I assure you that many people here make mistakes. They buy a cheap one and when they start throwing weight, the bench moves, dances or does not transmit stability.
And that completely changes the training.
A firm bench allows you to apply real strength, improve control and progress without fear. If you can only have one, a flat bench already allows you to do a lot. But if you can, an adjustable bench opens up so many more options: incline presses, military press work, and more. military pressshoulder exercises, variants…
When the bench is solid, you notice it from the first repetition.
Bars and discs: where the difference really makes a difference
Here it is not worth saving.
A good bar will last for years. A bad one bends, doesn’t rotate well or gives you a bad feeling. And when you’re strength training, that matters a lot more than it seems.
A standard Olympic bar is the base. If you do Crossfit or weightlifting movements, even better if it has good bearings and soft sleeves.
As for discs, if you are going to release the bar or make dynamic movements, bumper plates are the most practical. They protect the floor, make less noise and extend the life of the material.
When you have a good bar and solid discs, the workout changes. It becomes more serious.
The material that multiplies your results (without taking up a lot of space)
Once you have the base, there is small material that brings a lot to the table:
- Dumbbells: They allow you to work on hypertrophy, stability and unilateral work.
- Elastic bands: These are something I use a lot. They are useful for warming up, adding progressive resistance or accessory work. I’ve explained how to use them to improve your Bench press here.

It doesn’t take up much space, but it adds up to a lot.

Invest in what affects your safety and progress:
